IRIAN JAYA THE PAPUA
IRIAN
JAYA is the western half of New Guinea. It became part of Indonesia
in 1963 when it was acquired from the Dutch and is Indonesia’s
largest Province. It is 421.981 square km, mainly jungle. PAPUA is the
other name for Irian Jaya and it is administratively dedicated by Indonesian
Government in year 2002 for the indigenous people in the island.
The world
has known its name through out the expeditors and scientists who have
made a foot steps on this island for some periods while the most famous
tribes for Irian Jaya such as Asmat with their outstanding wooden crafts,
Dani people in Baliem Valley with its incredible stone age cultural
heritage, Koroway people with their jungle isolated life, and Yali highlanders
in its traditional cultures.
HOW
TO REACH PAPUA (IRIAN JAYA)
Jakarta, Bali, and Medan are the main gates for entering Indonesia.
Daily flights by Garuda, Merpati, Celebes, and Efata Air from Jakarta
to Jayapura are available with transits in Makassar, Timika, and Biak.
To travel around remote places in Papua mostly by air transport, from
Jayapura to Wamena by regular flights of Merpati or Trigana air, while
Missionary flights can also be chartered to and from remote villages.

/ 4NIGHTS BALIEM VALLEY EXCLUSIVE PROGRAM
DAY
01 : JAYAPURA arrival - WAMENA (L,D)
Morning
arrive at Sentani airport of Jayapura, meeting service then catch flight
to Wamena around 09.00. Arrive at Wamena airport, transfer to Baliem
Pilamo Hotel for check-in. After short briefing about your trip then
visiting hanging bridge and local market. Lunch serve at a local restaurant.
After lunch continue to visit Dani villages near Wamena. Afternoon drive
back to hotel for your dinner and overnight stay.
DAY
02 : WAMENA – KURIMA – WAMENA (B,L,D)
Today we drive 40 minutes to Sogokmo in the Southern of Baliem valley,
and start to have a day trekking passing some sweet potato fields and
enjoy the gorgeous scenery surroundings. You will get to Kurima, the
sub District of the tribe and along the trail you will meet local people
with friendly smiles in their traditional clothes. After picnic lunch,
heading back to Sogokmo where the car pick you up to Wamena for dinner
& overnight stay (Walk approx. 4-5 hours).

03 : WAMENA – JIWIKA (Pig feast & dance) – WAMENA (B,L,D)
Breakfast at hotel, driving to Jiwika in the North of Baliem valley,
a village well-known with its old smoked mummy. You may explore the
traditional village around, or climb the Mili mountain where salt pool
exist on top. Here you will learn how the locals doing their traditional
salt process. Lunch served enroute. At noon, enjoy a local performance
such as mocked war and traditional Earth oven cooking. Today you can
be interacted with the local Dani people and learn about their way of
life. Back to Hotel late in the afternoon for dinner and overnight stay.
DAY
04 : WAMENA – JAYAPURA (B,L,D)
After breakfast at hotel, transfer to airport for your flight to Jayapura.
Upon arrival at airport of Jayapura You may have a full day sightseeing
tour including Mac Arthur 2 nd World War monument, Sentani lake and
it’s small island. Lunch at local resturant. After lunch visit
Hamadi market and if the time still permit museum can be visited. Late
afternoon drive back to your hotel.

05 : JAYAPURA – DEPARTURE (B)
Free at your own leisure until transfer to airport for your flight to
the next destination. End of services.

& 7NIGHTS SOUTHERN BALIEM VALLEY TREKKING
DAY 01 : JAYAPURA arrival – Wamena – SOGOKMO – KURIMA
– KILISE (L,D)
Arrivals
in the morning of Jayapura, meeting service then catch the flight to
Wamena around 09.00. Arrive at Wamena walk to city then drive 40 minutes
to Sogokmo in the South of Baliem valley with accompanied by your guide,
porters and cook, the starting point of the trekking. Heading to Kurima,
sub District of the tribe on level terrain then continue climbing the
Hesegem hill on the direction of Kilise, the destination village. Along
the trails, you will meet local people in their activities and yet the
scenery is very beautiful around. Lunch served enroute. In the afternoon
you may explore the traditional villages and learn about the people
way of life. Dinner and stay at local house of Kilise. (Walk approx.4
hours).
DAY
02 : KILISE – WUSEREM (B,L,D)
After breakfast, you are proceeded to descend the steep hill down to
traditional hanging bridge across Baliem river. Today’s walk is
a little harder with narrow and slippery paths. But you may also enjoying
the nature’s beauty by stopping in the small river of Mugi to get
refreshing while the cook serving lunch. After this part, trek thru
Dani gardens and some local traditional house till Wuserem where you
will have dinner and overnight stay. (Walk approx. 5 hours)
DAY
03 : WUSEREM – WESAGALEP (B,L,D)
The next morning after breakfast continue trekking to Wesagalep village.
You are proceed to cross a river where you may have lunch and refresh
yourself in the river. The way to Wesagalep village from the river will
pass a small rain forest and the air will be a little humid. Dinner
and overnight at church or local house of Wesagalep. (Walk approx. 6
hours)
DAY
04 : WESAGALEP – TANGMA (B,L,D)
Leaving Wesagalep village in the morning after breakfast descending
a very steep hill all the way down to Baliem river gorge. Spectacular
scenery, gentle local people, and beautiful terraced sweet potato fields
you will see on the way down. Lunch served by the cook near Baliem river.
After crossing the hanging bridge, the uphill trail leads you to Tangma,
the next village. Dinner and overnight in a guest house of the local
priest of Tangma. (Walk approx. 6 hours)
DAY
05 : TANGMA – KURIMA – SOGOKMO – WAMENA (B,L,D)
After breakfast, continue the last trekking day back to Sogokmo climb
through Hesegem mountain and down to Kurima before arriving to Sogokmo
where the car will take you back to “civilization” of Wamena.
Lunch will be provided by your cook near Sogokmo. Then drive to Wamena.
Dinner and stay at Baliem Pilamo Hotel.

Breakfast at hotel, then transfer to airport for your flight back to
Jayapura. Upon arrival at Sentani airport of Jayapura, direct visit
of the WW II memorial, lake of Sentani to see the local tribe life in
the village. Lunch serve at local restaurant. Afternoon continue touring
and visit the Museum of anthropology, market and Jayapura city. Late
the afternoon back to hotel for overnight stay and dinner.

08 : JAYAPURA – DEPARTURE (B)
Breakfast at hotel and proceed to airport for Depart to the next destination.
End of services.

KOROWAI TRIBE (TREE HOUSE PEOPLE) ADVENTURE
DAY
01 : JAYAPURA – ARRIVAL (D)
Upon arrive at Sentani airport of Jayapura, meeting service then transfer
to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay. The rest of the day will
be free.
DAY
02 : JAYAPURA - WAMENA (B,L,D)
Early transfer to the airport for your flight to Wamena. Upon arrive
at Wamena check in to hotel, and then proceed to traditional market
nearby then back to hotel for lunch. After lunch continue to visit Dani
village of Suroba & Jiwika in the North of Baliem valley. Afternoon
back to hotel for overnight stay.
DAY
03 : WAMENA – YANIRUMA – KOROWAY (B,L,D)
After breakfast, by your charter Missionary plane to Yaniruma for an
hour. Yaniruma is a home of Korowai tribe, the people who live in the
tree house in traditional way, some of them still holding the old beliefs
and used to practice cannibalism until Missionary arrived and build
new settlements to get the Korowai tribe more developed. The Missionary
arrived in year 1970’s brought Christian religion to Korowai people.
Yaniruma was opened for tourist in early 1980’s but until now the
place is still the most remote tribe and desired by most of adventurous
tourists all at once anthropology expedition. It’s unique culture
and environment make adventurers interest to come. After organized the
local porters, have a canoe ride across the Dairam river. Then, you
are proceeded to go inside the forest searching for the tree house community
exist. Meals will be served by your cook. Overnight at Tree House people.
DAY
04 : JUNGLE TREK (B,L,D)
After breakfast, we trek to another tree house clan for about 4-5 hours.
We trek through sago swamps and sometimes we have to cross river with
one single log bridge. Lunch will serve enroute. The temperature is
hot and humid and there are many mosquitoes. Make sure you have malaria
medicines and mosquito repellent. Dinner and overnight at tree house
where the local people built tree house approximately 10 – 40 meters
from ground.
DAY
05 : REMAINING DAY WITH THE CLAN (B,L,D)
Today we join with local people, how to get the main food “SAGO”
you will see and learn the sago processing from starting to the end.
Lunch and dinner will be served by your cook. Overnight at Tree House.

06 : REMAINING DAY WITH THE CLAN (B,L,D)
Spend the day with local people to learn their way of life survive in
the forest. After breakfast you may go with them hunting, fishing and
other activities. Dinner and overnight at Tree house.

07 : JUNGLE TREK – YANIRUMA (B,L,D)
Today trekking back to Yaniruma. The paddling canoes waiting for you
ready to make you to the little civilization. Lunch served enroute.

08 : YANIRUMA – WAMENA (B,L,D)
The Missionary air craft will picks you up and fly you to Wamena. You
could see the scenery from the plane is nothing else, but nature’s
beauty. Great rivers and thick jungle are all you see from above. o/n

09 : WAMENA – JAYAPURA (B,L,D)
After breakfast in the morning, transfer to airport for your fly back
to Jayapura. In your leisure you may sightseeing tour or relaxing in
the beach. Afternoon drive back to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

10 : JAYAPURA – DEPARTURE (B)
After breakfast, depart to Sentani Airport for your next destination.
